Support of family and friends, expert information and guidance from the ALA, personalized reminders and progress updates keeps smokers on track to quit using this connected mobile health app.
Challenge
A leading multinational biopharmaceutical company, in concert with the American Lung Association, sought to launch an app and online community to help smokers facing common obstacles associated with quitting cigarettes by providing progress tracking, educational content and social community support.
Approach
Following a discovery workshop with the client and ALA, Newpage designed a user experience and solution architecture. The user experience design was guided by the ALA and incorporated real world feedback from smokers about what they say is most helpful to support them throughout their journey to quit smoking: The app provided:
- A personal progress tracker showing smoke free days and money saved
- Access to curated health articles, tips and educational content tailored to assist smoking cessation
- Real-time social feeds allowing smokers to share their progress with friends and family and receive messages of encouragement and support
The app was made available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android.
Results
More than 20,000 people downloaded the mobile app created by Newpage – a company that has demonstrated extensive experience with digital patient engagement apps. As a result of using the app, 57% of smokers reported smoking less, and 64% said they would recommend the app to others.
